- VOLATILE OILS AND FRACTIONS OF VOLATILE OILS

Volatile or essential oils may be defined as oily liquids which are entirely, or almost entirely, volatile without decomposition. A few, e.g. oil of anise, are solid at 15.5° c., but melt to form a liquid at slightly higher temperatures. Those volatile oils prepared other than by distillation, e.g. oil of lemon, contain a small proportion of non-volatile matter.

- How can we best detect hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer?

though a strong genetic predisposition to colorectal cancer (CRC) is rare, it is important because of its large contribution to CRC diagnosed before the age of 50 years and because mortality from CRC can be reduced by appropriate management. There are currently limitations in determining whether a case of CRC is “sporadic” or whether it might be related to an inherited predisposition. However, Australian research that examines the utility of new diagnostic tools to help diagnose genetic tendency to CRC may be showing us a way forward.

- Hypocomplementemia

In the late 19th century, serum was found to contain a nonspecific heat-labile complementary principle that interacted with antibodies to induce bacteriolysis. Ehrlich and Morgan termed this factor complement . The complement system as understood today is a multimolecular system composed of more than 20 proteins and consisting of serum proteins, serosal proteins, and cell membrane receptors that bind to complement fragments. They constitute 10% of the globulin fraction of serum. Many of these proteins are designated by the letter C and are assigned numbers in the order of their discovery.

- Is bupropion (Zyban) causing deaths?

From 1 February to 30 June 2001, 277 602 prescriptions for the smoking cessation drug bupropion hydrochloride (Zyban, GlaxoSmithKline) were processed. The Health Insurance Commission approved 343 737 prescriptions for bupropion between 1 February and 30 June.1 Comparing this figure with the 277 602 processed scripts, some 66 135 (19.2%) scripts went unfilled. One reason for this may have been extensive publicity given to reports of deaths and numerous adverse reactions following bupropion use.
